Everything You Need To Know

Good news New Yorkers: Summer is finally right around the corner! With the excitement of warm-weather activities quickly approaching, we understand there’s much work to be done before your homes are ready for outdoor entertainment.

Before we get to the fun part – backyard barbecues and pool parties – it’s important to understand the requirements set forth by New York State to ensure a safe and fun summer.

Whether you’re installing a new pool, or opening up an existing one, we know you’re well aware of the work it takes to maintain and keep it going for years to come…but you may not be aware of the specific (and required) guidelines for pool enclosures.

This article serves to quickly break down the information and give you the details you need to be an informed consumer when it comes to keeping your pool area safe with a residential pool fence that meets code.

Let’s start simple!

What does New York State define a swimming pool as? Any structure/basin/tank which is capable of containing water more than 24 inches deep in any area. This includes in-ground, above-ground and on-ground pools; indoor pools; hot tubs; spas; and fixed-in-place wading pools.

Does your swimming pool meet this definition? Great! Keep reading below for some of the requirements your residential pool enclosure needs to meet:

  • Must be at least 4 feet high.
  • Must completely surround the swimming pool and obstruct any access.
  • The space between the ground and the bottom of the barrier (fence) cannot exceed 2 inches.
  • Any openings within the barrier cannot exceed 4 inches.
  • Gates must be self-closing and self-latching and open away from the pool area.

Being an informed consumer is an important part of buying any product – whether it be a pool – or the enclosure that surrounds it. Remember, these regulations were set in place so that we can enjoy our warm weather and beautiful backyards in a safe way.
